Anatomy and Physiology
Students learn
the fascinating concepts of the human body.
Guided through 13 different body systems with lectures, diagrams, and
videos, the students gain an appreciation of the complexities of the human body
and how it works. At the same time they
are learning medical/dental terms including those related to diagnosis and
treatment. Oncology, Pharmacology, and
Oral Anatomy are addressed as well.
Medical/Dental Terminology
Using word parts
the student can quickly and accurately determine the meaning of a new
word. Also included are standard
medical/dental abbreviations.
Administrative Procedures

busy office are addressed. Students
learn scheduling, filing, telephone protocol, letter writing, business
communications, confidentiality and legal aspects, handling mail and Ministry
of Health billing.
Medical Transcription
This portion of the
program begins with a review of basic grammar and letter styles. Students review medical terminology and
combine this with their ever-increasing vocabulary to begin the transcription
process. The equipment itself is
described, then the students are shown the correct transcription
techniques. Students will transcribe a
variety of document types and styles, emulating the reality of a hospital and
it’s multiple departments
CPR Certification
A one-day course is provided by St. John’s ambulance. Students become certified in basic CPR for
adults.
INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS
Basic features of a computer system are defined. Features and uses of Windows are
explained.
MS Word
In MS Word, one of the
most popular word processing packages in the world, documents are created,
edited, formatted, saved, and retrieved from diskette. More advanced features such as tables,
newsletters, macros and merges are studied.
MD 4000/5000
MD 4000 is an automated scheduling and OHIP billing software package
that is commonly used in doctor’s offices.
Students will learn how to prepare schedules, book, cancel, and
change appointments, and send diskettes to OHIP with all the applicable
information needed to process the billing.
ABELDent BY LOGIC TECH
ABELDent is an automated scheduling and
insurance billing software package that is used in dental offices.
Students will learn how to set-up the
system with new dentists, patients, and insurance carriers, prepare schedules,
and process billing to individuals and insurance carriers.
Introduction to the Internet
The students will learn
some of the history behind the development of the Internet.
They will be shown how to
access and utilize different “search engines” to find information on the
Internet. E-mail procedures will also
be explored.
PROFESSIONAL INTERPERSONAL / SOFT SKILLS
In this module
we emphasize positive relationships, fostering the ideas of empathy, respect,
and encouragement and heavy focus on clear communication.
Soft Skills are
people skills - how to deal with people but specifically in the workforce. Employers need people who can work together.
Teamwork is an essential component in today’s business world and employers are
looking for people that, in addition to the technical skills, can work together
as part of “the team.” There is almost
as big a demand for soft skills as there is for technical skills.
This module
looks at some of the major issues in dealing with people in the workplace. The topics examined include working in
teams, groups and group dynamics, personalities and personality traits (and
some hints in how to deal with them) and effective listening.
Learn to
understand the technical aspect of communications through identified processes.
PROBLEM SOLVING
Identify and understand common occurrences that lead to conflicts, and
then, using a systematic model, prepare techniques to solve the problems.
TEAM BUILDING
Understand the dynamics that are going on and the skills, and
behaviours that are required to work effectively in a team environment.
Job search
Students will
learn job search techniques as well as networking (with people) and interview
strategies.
Learn to prepare
eye-catching resumes to get that job that you have worked so hard to achieve,
from Ican College’s Placement Officer. With
her finger on the pulse of what employers are looking for in a resume as well
as what they want in prospective employees you will get real-world and current
instruction.
Work Placement
Ican College’s Placement Officer will meet
with each student individually to discuss aspirations and personal interests,
and an 8-week co-op work placement will be arranged at the end of the 15-week
class/lecture/lab portion of the curriculum.
